Biography

Loretta Fasan is a Canadian artist painting in oils. Many of her paintings portray women in costumes, sometimes with a trompe l'oeil aspect. The paintings possess a range of influences, from the soft realism of Victorian art to the moody quality of Baroque paintings. The figures often have a dreamy or mysterious quality, and are sometimes humorous. She also paints portraits, still lifes, and more recently, landscapes. Her paintings have been exhibited in the United States and Canada, and are in private collections throughout the US. and Canada, and Europe. Her artwork has been featured for several years on PBS television.

Artist statement:

My paintings are a combination of realism, pattern, and trompe l'oeil, I am strongly influenced by 19th century realism, and Klimt The paintings are a balance romance, traditional technique, and strong design. I enjoy the challenge of painting using saturated primary colors and flat pattern in combination with fully rendered facial features and modulated shadow, and making it all work. In addition to this, I also like purely fanciful romance and humor in art, and I try to include these qualities in the female characters who inhabit my paintings. Some of the paintings have a strong geometric structure. The various necklaces, hairstyles, and ornaments create arcs and triangles which create rein in and control the myriad patterns within the painting. I try to give the viewer a feast for the eyes.
